ABSTRACT

Traditional chemical synthesis relies on covalent bonds to connect atoms and shape molecular structure. Mechanical bonds offer a completely different approach: instead of sharing electrons, two or more molecular rings are physically interlocked like a keychain, held together by spatial geometry rather than chemical forces.

This research explores how catenanes, a specific type of interlocked molecules, can improve transition metal catalysis. In a catenane metal complex, the metal center sits inside these interlocked rings. When a ligand temporarily detaches during a reaction, the mechanical bond prevents it from floating away, keeping it trapped near the metal for quick re-coordination. This physical confinement alters the local environment around the metal and changes how reactions take place. By comparing interlocked metal complexes with non-interlocked controls, this project aim at demonstrating how mechanical bonds can be used as a fresh tool to control chemical reactivity, stability, and selectivity in catalysis.
