Overseas Chinese Schools in South Korea as Conduits and Beneficiaries of ROC (Republic of China)-ROK (Republic of Korea) Relations, 1940s to the Present

Project Summary:
This project examines the establishment, history, and ongoing presence of overseas Chinese schools in South Korea as an important aspect of Sino-Korean foreign relations and sociocultural relations from the 1930s to the present. These schools have been important institutions of education for ethnonational Chinese students since their establishment at various times during the early and mid-twentieth century, and now also for ethnic Korean students who attend them to pursue a Chinese language and culture-centered education.
The main objectives of this project are:
1. To contextualize this narrative in the geopolitical frameworks of the Cold War (1947–1991), the long-term consequences of the Chinese Civil War (1927–1949), and the ROC’s ongoing disputes with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) about the status of China
2. To broaden the understanding of the Chinese diaspora in South Korea, particularly the interpretations and expressions of sociocultural identity
